Floating Garden – in the Peter Street Basin

Floating Garden – in the Peter Street Basin

September 2017

A floating garden will be installed in the Peter Street Basin to enhance the water as a focal point, improve habitat for aquatic life, and reintroduce wetland species to the once industrialized waterway.

The project is being led by Scadding Court Community Centre (SCCC), in partnership with The Waterfront BIA, Harbourfront Centre, Ward 20 Councillor Joe Cressy, Waterfarmers Aquaponics and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

Youth from Alexandra Park will work on the assembly and installation of the floating garden, creating a deeper connection between the AP community and Waterfront resource that is right down the block.

The four gardens will hold wetland species such as Cattail, Swamp Milkweed, Yellow Iris, Mare’s Tail, and Blue Rush. Waterfarmers Aquaponics designed the gardens to be unique for the Canadian climate. Once this prototype is tested, SCCC hopes to see this type of Waterfront reclamation be replicated with community support throughout the city.

Join them for the launch on September 23, 11 am at the Peter Street Basin.  Loch & Quay will be catering the event.
